4 things you probably didn’t know about your vagina…

  1. Your vagina is self-cleaning

It’s weird to think right? Your vagina does in fact clean itself naturally, that’s what discharge is. Normally you might find discharge in your underwear throughout the day which appears as a result of your va jay-jay’s cleaning efforts! Make sure to avoid cleaning the inside of your vagina, as doing so can mess up your PH balance. When your PH balance is off, it can increase your chances of bacterial vaginosis and infection. It is safe to wash your labial fold and perineum, just use natural and fragrance-free soap.

  1. It’s ultra-absorbent

Your vagina is actually more absorbent than skin and its health is extremely important to your body! Some of the external parts of the vulva are also extremely absorbent such as the clitoris, clitoral hood, labia minora and urethra. Although your vagina is ultra-absorbent, the canal also washes away harmful microorganisms through the production of mucus! Click here to read more about the impacts of toxic period care

  1. Yes, your vagina is supposed to smell

Your vagina contains lots of good bacteria that keeps your PH levels healthy and balanced around the clock. This bacteria has a smell which is totally normal and doesn’t need to be masked by any form of scented perfumes or body wash. Doing so can actually be harmful to your vagina and upset the PH levels - as mentioned above, your va jay-jay is super absorbent. However, if you are experiencing a scent that is unusual for you, it is recommended you consult a doctor. Click here to read more about vaginal odor

  1. You can’t lose anything in your vagina

I wouldn’t be alone saying that I used to be scared of losing my tampon… Surprisingly, a tampon can only go so far in your vagina and can’t actually escape to the uterus, the top of your vagina is simply too small. Although you can’t lose a tampon in your vagina – it’s easy to forget about it! Make sure that you don’t keep your tampon in for longer than 8 hours to reduce the risk of toxic shock syndrome. If your tampon has been in for longer than the recommended time and feels as though it has slipped out of reach, it may be necessary to visit your doctor.
